Trees, grown up
- The trees of the realm have been replanted: trunks flare into roots at the foot, limbs reach up into the leaves, and every crown is lumpy and uneven, lit on top and shaded beneath.
- Firs stand in ragged tiers, birches are white with black marks, ash trees are short, knobbly and broad, alders trail long streamers, ironwoods are dark and dense, and beeches blaze in reds, oranges and gold.
- No two neighbours are quite alike: each tree leans, turns and grows a little its own way. A felled tree leaves a stump with a pale cut and its roots.
